Denmark warns operators against proper advertising of machine winnings

The Danish Gambling Authority has issued a reminder of operators' obligations and advertising agreements. In response to reports that some companies may have advertised inflated winnings on slot machines and slots, Spillemyndigheden said that winnings from such gambling games cannot exceed DKK 600 ($95) according to the country's current gambling laws.

Denmark is considered to be the safest gambling market in Europe and the only market that fully complies with European standards for safe and responsible gambling. The measure applies only to slot machines in restaurants, gaming halls and udenlandske casinoer uden dansk licens, the regulator specified in a release.

All marketing must be done responsibly, with the correct figures, so that it does not give the impression that some winnings are higher than they may actually be, the regulator added. Spillemyndigheden reminded that an advertisement claiming that someone won more than 600 DKK should make it clear that this amount was most likely won by playing several games.

Regulation of gambling in Denmark without severe restrictions

Denmark has successfully regulated its gambling market for many years. It adheres to strict consumer protection practices that focus on nominal publicity, although the country has not completely abandoned bonuses and marketing efforts, unlike other countries.

Spain and Italy are two other European countries that have taken a somewhat more aggressive approach to gambling marketing and have found it necessary to stop advertising altogether, for example. In Italy, there can be no form of gambling advertising, whether physical or interactive. Denmark, however, has decided to maintain marketing efforts to give operators a level playing field against offshore operators who advertise aggressively in Europe.

Denmark also mandates that any bonuses must be available for at least 60 days after receiving the bonus, giving players enough time to comply and cash out potential winnings.
