Prior to the Selco interview, there will be much preparation for the days leading up to it.
Research the Trade Counter Model
Find out about the Trade Counter Model, i.e. how Selco’s branches are laid out and about the membership scheme for trade customers (i.e. builders, plumbers, contractors etc).
Read the Job Advert Again
Once you’ve found a Selco job, make sure you’ve gone back to the listing and noted out all of the responsibilities of the job. Try to think of examples from your past experience where you have been able to deliver on each of these points. As mentioned previously, Selco Jobs are typically listed by retailers, warehouse workers and people from the trades, so make sure you draw upon your past experiences and do not be afraid to use examples from outside of your current role.
Practise Scenario-Based Answers
We use scenario-based questions, i.e. handling difficult customers or working under pressure. Therefore, it is advisable to practice answers to competency-based questions by using a situation-action-result format to provide clear and deliver the best answers.
Brush Up on Basic Materials Knowledge
For a job which involves serving trade customers in a trade counter, it would be beneficial to have some knowledge of the trade counter and the materials that are typically used in the trade, i.e. timber, fixings, plasterboard, etc. You would not be expected to have an in-depth knowledge of the materials, but an understanding of the basic trade materials and their uses would be beneficial.
Sort the Practicalities
Planning for the interview should include arranging how you can get to the branch for the interview, arriving 10 minutes prior to time specified for the interview to complete paperwork etc. A useful reference for Selco Jobs is https://bmcareers.com/employer/selco-builders-warehouse/.
By preparing adequately for the interview, you will feel more at ease during the interview and be able to answer questions effectively.
